Death of outrage?
I haven't said anything about this for a long time, choosing instead to just keep things to myself. But something has happened in Sacramento that affects me and is taking place in a building that my taxes pay for and being sponsored by someone who my taxes pay.

When the Quran was supposedly being mistreated in G'itmo the blame America first crowd was out in force. Oh how terrible we were for not treating this book properly. Turns out the story was a fabrication and people died in Afghanistan as a result. Where was the outrage for this fabrication and misrepresentationof our troops?

Where is the outrage for mistreatment of the Bible, or Book of Mormon, or other religious texts in this country? Are we not concerned about it because of the separation of church and state? If Government isn't supposed to sponsor religion why are we buying Qurans, what would happen if the Government were to provide bibles? Would there be an outcry over tax payer dollars being spent on Bibles for prisoners in US prisons? I certainly think there would.

Where is the outrage when United States Senators go to the floor of the Senate and compare our men and women to "Nazis, Soviets in their Gulags, Pol Pot, and other mad regimes"? This accusation was based on an un-official, un-confirmed FBI memo. And turning the air conditioner on and off, depriving someone of sleep, forcing them to listen to loud music (are my neighbors equivalent to nazis?) and the other things he listed hardly qualifies as something so awful as the things Nazis did. In fact we do the same thing to our own citizens with the Clinton administration and the fiasco in Waco. Dick Durbin then makes an apology, sort-of. He apologized if you were offended by his words, but not saying what he did. In the mean time his words are being broadcast around the world giving aid and comfort to the enemy. Since his comments government officials have been to G'itmo and declared that torture is not a problem there. In fact they are all issued prayer rugs, they have arrows painted on the floor towards Mecca, they get 5 prayer times a day (gee, what if we had 5 prayer times a day in public schools, what do you think would happen?), meals that are far and above better than what our troops eat, etc... And remember, these are TERRORISTS. The same people that killed 3,000 American citizens on 9/11. People who live to kill the infidels in a twisted, perverted, version of Islam.

That's just a couple of the things that have really got me ticked off.

This leads me to what finally prompted me to post this.

In Sacramento, in the California Department of Justice building there is an art show being co-sponsored by State Attorney General Bill Lockyer. This exhibit is filled with anti-American works of art. Where is the outrage for this type of art in a taxpayer funded building being sponsored by a public official. I have no problems with freedom of expression, if you want to make anti-American art then that is your choice, but don't put in a building paid for by the tax payers. Some of this particular "art" was created by Steve Pearcy, Sacramento resident who created a display hanging U.S. Troops in effigy at his home. I have seen outrage over all types of art, art that was in public museums for various reasons, but hear nothing about this. Again I want to emphasize, we have freedom of expression in this country and you are free to create whatever art you want, but don't put it in a public building with something that appears to be sponsored by taxpayer dollars. Not Cool.

Check out the artwork and decide for yourself:

Sacramento Union Article on Art Display

What happened to my country? Where are our priorities? Where is the outrage with the blame America first attitude that seems so pervasive? Where is the focus on improving things here like fixing Social Security, economic stimulus, education, and other domestic issues?

Rant over...

Is is an outrage and very disturbing
Thanks for voicing your opinion. I myself have become apathetic, which I admit is not good....but feel there isn't much one can do about it and so I go on...

It's scary that in America, which was supposedly founded on the principles of freedom of speech, religion, and the separation between church and state, we are supposed to be "outraged" about the representation of another opinion besides the governments in our public spaces. The artist pays taxes too. Public buildings are just that, public, meaning belonging to everyone. And there is a huge number of people in this country (intelligent, responsible, tax-paying individuals) that disagree with our current administration's policies. And no, this is not being "anti-American". I think that it is extremely "American" to state the problems you have with the government. And these expressions of frustrations with the United States' policies have much as much right (as well as need) to be on public buildings as the expressions of satisfaction.

While I tried to make it clear that I don't have problems with people expressing an opinion contrary to mine, or one that might be seen as "anti-American" or against the government. My problem is with this being sponsored in a Government building paid for by taxpayer dollars where there should be a position of neutrality.

You'll notice that I didn't call for a display of patriortic art or say that only one type of art or display should be allowed. We have the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and 225 years after they were written are the framework for the best government and best nation in the world. One of Freedom and the right to express your views how you see fit. But when that expression be it "pro-American" or "anti-American" comes inside Government buildings at taxpayer expense I have a problem with it. It seems that almost daily there are attacks on artworks and other expressions of all kinds, particularly those that are "pro-government, pro-troops, pro-American" of late. I was wondering why this has flown under the radar? :D

Glad to see we can exercise our 1st ammendment rights and share ideas, thoughts, and feelings on where we are today as a country and have it be okay, and 100% acceptable.
